Lamb v. Camden LBC [1981] QB 625
The plaintiff’s rented out a furnished house to a tenant. The council, the defendant, in the course of replacing the sewer on the street of the said house, caused flooding resulting in damage to the house and the loss of the tenant. The plaintiff then made arrangements to have the house repaired and returned to her home in New York leaving the house unoccupied. Squatters then entered the house on two occasions causing £30,000 of damages. The plaintiff sued the council for damages caused by the flood and by the squatters. The plaintiff succeeded in the claim for flood damages but it was held that the damage caused by the squatters was too remote.
