Preface:
Negotiation is something of a life skill. Certainly the emphasis is on practice makes perfect. However in doing so you must bear in mind the key points of successful negotiation, and endeavour to implement them as effectively as possible. Negotiation is an out of court process. It is the art of representing your client's case in a way that is as conducive as possible to obtaining the best settlement for him. It is a process of persuasion. Whilst competitive in nature, any negotiation also requires concessions to be made by each party. Firstly we shall concentrate on the main aspects of the skill that should be borne in mind at all times. These are essential to passing an assessment. Then we will go on to look at constructing a negotiation plan. Finally we will turn to a practical exercise to tie up all the advice proffered. Negotiation can be summed up as follows,
N - Never lose a calm, confident and collected attitude
E - Endeavor to meet your client's objectives
G - Get the best deal for your client
O -Overt stalemates
T - Try not to be a pushover
I - Intelligent and structured arguments
A -Always use a plan
T - Try not to be overbearing
I - Initially aim high
O- Organisation is essential
N - Never forget your opponent is a fellow professional
