History Of The Founding Of The EU

A very brief history on the founding of the European Union

The Second World War had catastrophic consequences for Europe. Following the end of the war in 1945, it was agreed that certain safeguards had to be put in place so as to prevent similar events from taking place in the future. This meant there would have to be greater co-operation between European powers, particularly between France and Germany if future conflicts were to be avoided. It was thought that if the industries between these two countries were joined, it would be less likely that they would pursue war against each other.

In 1949 and with the purpose of stabilising Europe, the Council of Europe was established. The Schuman Plan quickly followed in May 1950 and called for the pooling of French and German coal production.

In 1951, the Schuman Plan led to the Treaty of Paris and to the establishment of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC). The ECSE was the first of three European Communities whose members consisted of France, Germany, the Benelux countries and Italy.

Two other European communities were established by virtue of the Treaty of Rome in 1957. These were known as the European Atomic Energy Community (EACC or Euratom) and the European Economic Community (later popularly known as the Common Market). The original members were again the same as that of the ECSC.

All three communities were supranational in character, with law making institutions and a judiciary. The ECSC and Euratom however, made little impact upon the general public. This was very possibly due to the fact these two Communities were concerned with issues that did not directly affect the daily lives of ordinary European citizens.

The EEC on the other hand, had an enormous impact on the general public, due to the fact it created a single economic market place, with freedom of goods, services and capital at its core. Whether directly or indirectly, the Economic Market continues to affect the lives of all those who reside within the European Union today, even if some residents continue to be unaware of its existence and primary role within Europe.
